Coaches

Lake Washington High School has a very rich tradition in wrestling.  Every wrestler who competes for the Kang Wrestling Team is taught the meaning of "Kang Pride" which is instilled in them for the rest of their lives.   The Kang Wrestling team has been coached by two Washington State Hall of Fame coaches, Jim Jolgen (1955-1969) and Doug Chapple (1982-1992) who was followed by Hall of Fame nominee Barry Knott (1992-1997).

Nicknamed "Daddy Kangaroo" by a local newspaper, Coach Chapple's contributions and words will always be remembered as the high school's gymnasium was named D.A. Chapple Gymnasium in 1992.  He also leaves in his wrestlers, the memories of his impressive 109-17-3 win/loss record at LW and his coaching style of talking to them as they worked out, sharing his wisdom and telling them to "smile when it hurts most."  Thanks Daddy, we always will.

Coach Jolgen is the man who knew how to win.  His contributions to the high school were enormous.  As a head coach for the Kang wrestling team, he put up an impressive 115-2 win/loss record.  If Coach Chapple is Daddy Kangaroo, Coach Jolgen is "Granddaddy Kangaroo."  Even after his retirement, Coach Jolgen was still a figure in Kang Wrestling as he would come by and see how the team was doing and set up the Annual Lake Washington Kang Wrestling Tournament.

Coach Knott is another great coach who came in having very large shoes to fill at LW.  He brought with him, his vast knowledge of the sport and his determination to win.  He taught his wrestlers, winning only counts when you are able to look at yourself in the mirror afterwards.  He taught them that the only thing stopping them from doing anything, is the thought that they can't do it.  He filled in very nicely to the Kang  Wrestling team and in carrying on the Tradition.

People to Note

Kang Wrestling has had several people that have gone on to be successful and should be noted. Coach Ted Kuykendall was an assistant coach for the Kang Wrestling team from 1988-1992. Previous to that, he was a coach in Idaho where he lead his team to seven straight championships and was named Idaho State Wrestling Coach of the Year.  The Kang Wrestling Team is in great dept to his contributions to the teams he helped coach.

A 1992 graduate and Kang Wrestler, Lynn Marble, put it best when he said: "Coach Kuykendall has forgotten more about wrestling than we will ever know."

Another person to note is Larry Brown.  He is a member of the Washington State Wrestling Hall of Fame.  Coach Brown coached at the high school level for 28 years before retiring in 1995.  He finished his coaching career with an impressive 248-114-8 record at Montesano High School (1968-1973) and at Fife High School (1973-1995).  During this time, he coached 34 state placers including 9 state champions.  The Kang Wrestling team was very lucky to have Coach Brown as their trainer.
